Redline Speed Worx is Proud to Announce We are NOW offering CYRO-REM (R) race component finishing services via Evans Performance, the leader in the industry. They are the ONLY Company that has both Cryogenic Processing AND REM (R) Isotropic Superfinishing (ISF) (R) capabilities IN-HOUSE!

Their unique two step process involves the Cryogenic Processing of your Racing Components followed by REM (R) Chemically Accelerated Isotropic Superfinishing.

The Cyro-Rem component service is the ultimate service for the ultimate racing component. All treated products will outlast & outperform the competition at every turn and every lap.

What is REM (R) Isotrophic Superfinish (ISF)(R)

The REM (R) procedure is not a polishing process but rather a finishing process. REM (R) is a chemically accelerated process which involves two steps. The first step, referred to as the “Refinement Process”, involves a chemical interaction on the surface of the part. A soft, thin (one micron) film is formed on the surface of the part. The part then interacts with the ceramic media in a special vibratory bowl.

During this interaction the film is physically removed from the “peaks” of the processed part and the “valleys” are unaffected. The chemically induced film re-form only at the peaks that are interacting with the vibratory media, and the process repeats itself. Over time, the peaks are removed, leaving only the valleys, producing the improved micro finish. The second step is referred to as the “Burnish Process.” After the required micro finish is achieved, a mild alkaline mixture is introduced. After a relatively short period a polished, chrome-like finish is produced. In addition to the polishing effects, this step effectively removes all traces of the film formation from the “refinement” process.

What is Cryogenics?

Cryogenics is a derivative of two Greek words – “Kryos” which means cold or freezing and “genes” meaning born or one that is produced.

Residual stresses exist in all types of parts from engines to tooling. The stress is introduced into the part at the time of casting, forging, heat treating or machining. These stresses create an invisible random grain pattern. Parts expand from the heat generated during operation, the retained stresses cause uneven expansion which results in increased dimensional instability with increased wear and decreased performance.

AFTER the “CRYO-REM” Finishing Service

Deep Cryogenic temperatures are required to effect a complete molecular change in most alloys giving the microstructure a more uniform grain structure. Deep Cryogenic temperatures distribute large quantities of very hard, fine carbides, that develop uniformly throughout the structure.

Heat treatment of steel involves the transformation from its softer more malleable annealed state to a harder more durable state. This is done, as it has been for centuries, by heating the steel and then rapidly cooling it. The result is a harder and more wear resistant object. The metallurgical reason for this is that as the steel is heated, it forms an austenite (large, unstable particles of carbon carbide) crystal structure or matrix. Rapidly cooling or quenching the steel (traditionally at room temperature) triggers some of the austenite structure to change into a different matrix called martensite (a more uniformly refined grain structure). It is the martensite structure that gives tempered steel its hardness and wear resistance for applications from cutting tools to engine parts.

The goal of heat treatment is to transform as much of the austenite as possible into martensite. However, some of the austenite is retained even after tempering. Through experimentation it was found that if the quench was lower than the traditional room temperature, less austenite was retained. Cryogenic treatment is an extension of the well known heat and quench cycle. Cryogenic Processing is specifically about controlled thermal cycling of materials over a period of up to 72 hours.

AFTER the “CRYO-REM” Finishing Service

The austenite to martensite transformation achieved by deep thermal cryogenics is responsible for the exceptional wear characteristics due to a denser structure and resulting in a larger surface area of contact wiich reduces stress, fatigue, friction, heat and wear.

Cryogenic processing is a one time process, not a coating or surface treatment that can be machined away. It will not make the component more brittle or change its physical size.

What happens to Cryogenically processed material

Cryogenically processed engines enjoy an increase in HP & Torque and prolonged engine life

Abrasive wear resistance is increased

A denser molecular structure is created in processed parts

The resulting stronger surface area that is created reduces friction, hear and wear

Allows for rapid cooling of treated parts such as brake rotors

High frequency and harmonic vibration is significantly reduced or eliminated

Soft retained austenite is transformed to much harder martensite

Microfine carbide fillers are formed which enhances the large carbide structures

Durability or wear life of processed parts is greatly increased

Residual stresses are decreased

Brittleness is decreased

Tensile strenght, toughness and stability is increased coupled with the release of internal stresses

The “CRYO-REM” Finish Process

The first step in the ‘CRYO-REM” (R) Service is to Cryogenically Process your racing components. The Second Step involves REM (R) Isotropic Super Finishing utilizing REM (R) Chemicals, Inc. patented Systems. (Applicable for most types of metals including aluminum, stainless, steel, etc.) The REM (R) process provides an Isotropic Superfinish (ISF) (R) which has a chrome-like appearance.

Evans Performance holds the exclusive license from REM Chemicals, Inc. to offer Isotropic Super Finishing services in Georgia. Evans Performance and our sister Company, Professional Cryogenic Metallurgy & Coatings, LLC are one of the few licensed to provide REM (R) Isotropic Superfinishing (ISF)(R). They offer three REM (R) equipment packages which provides the ability to process high volumes of finishing with quick turn-around service.

Cryogenic processing of your racing components provides all the cryogenic benefits as described on the “What is Cryogenics” page of this web site. These benefits include: Increased HP & Torque; increased abrasive wear resistance; denser molecular structure; stronger component surface; reduction is friction, heat and wear; allows for rapid cooling of components; reduces or eliminates high frequency and harmonic vibrations; relief of residual stress points in components; multiple increases in life of components.

Following the cryogenic process we then REM (R) Isotropic Superfinish your Racing Component.

The REM (R) process is not a polishing process but rather a finishing process. The procedure involves two steps. The chemically induced film re-forms only at the peaks that are interacting with the vibratory media, and the process repeats itself.

In addition to the polishing effects, this step effectively removes all traces of the film formation from the “Refinement Process.”

Redline Speed Worx is pleased to announce the release of APR’s Stage 3+ High-Flow, CNC-Ported, Performance Cylinder Head for the 2.0T FSI (EA113) Engine.

APR’s engineers have optimized the FSI head with proprietary, computer-controlled porting conducted on APR’s in-house 5-Axis Centroid CNC machine, our engineers have increased airflow by 17% on the intake ports and an additional 12% on the exhaust ports. The engine’s boost-to-airflow ratio is reduced by roughly 10% while also reducing intake air temperature and alleviating backpressure. As a result, the spark knock threshold is extended up to 7 degrees allowing for a substantial increase in power.

Through specific Stage III+ calibration changes, this directly translates to a +70 HP gain over APR’s existing BPY, AXX and BWA Stage III Turbocharger System on 93 (R+M)/2 octane fuel and up to +126 HP on race fuel!

CNC Ported for Precision and Repeatability

Airflow Increased 17% on Intake Ports

Airflow Increased 10% on Exhaust Ports

Boost-To-Airflow Ratio Decreased 10%

Intake Air Temperature Decreased

Backpressure Alleviated

+70 HP on 93 (R+M)/2 Fuel over Stage III

+126 HP on Race Fuel over Stage III

Includes APR Stage III+ Software for Existing Customers

Five years prior to release, APR’s engineers began research and development on high flow cylinder heads. With the need to provide the most consistent and technologically advanced head porting solution, APR tested and quickly looked beyond manual head porting – each system is CNC machined to ensure strict repeatability. The goal was simple; a bolt on hardware solution with matching software, to integrate seamlessly into APR’s existing product line.

Finding the Bottlenecks

In simplest terms, an engine is an air pump. The more air an engine can flow, the more power it can achieve given an adequate supply of fuel and ignition. Through development, APR has been able to continually increase power on the 2.0T FSI by finding bottlenecks in the system and eliminating them one at a time.

The 2.0T FSI’s factory intake and exhaust are the first two items causing an airflow restriction and as such both of these items are upgraded to expand the capabilities of the engine. After this, the factory K03 turbocharger becomes a restriction and therefore an entry level K04 Turbocharger System is available. This turbocharger comes standard on several high-end Audi, VW and Seat vehicles and eventually becomes the largest restriction point in the system.

APR’s solution to the flow-limited factory turbocharger is the Stage III Turbocharger System. Stage III consists of an entirely new high flow exhaust manifold, small frame Garrett Honeywell Turbocharger and larger turbocharger inlet and outlet plumbing. This system is capable of exploiting the bottleneck in the system between the K04 and Stage III, which in this case is the factory cylinder head.

As the final stage of the air intake and the first stage of the exhaust, the cylinder head is the most critical piece of the air pump. The cylinder head is a restriction on both the intake and exhaust side at Stage III airflow levels. This results in a relatively high boost-to-airflow ratio and excessive backpressure on the exhaust side. By machining the cylinder head ports, the boost-to-airflow ratio decreases by as much as 10% and enough backpressure is alleviated to extend the spark knock threshold by roughly 7 degrees. Together these benefits and others translate into an additional 70-126 HP, depending on octane, over our standard Stage III Turbocharger System!

Testing

APR has tested countless cylinder head port profiles over the past five years to ensure we’ve arrived at the best possible configuration. It’s important to understand that an increase in flow at the inlet or exhaust port is often coupled with a decrease in air velocity. Porting the cylinder head is not a simple process of making each port larger. For this reason, porting the cylinder head on a vehicle with a K04 or smaller turbocharger will actually decrease the output of the engine. The turbocharger itself represents a larger restriction than the cylinder head, so porting accomplishes nothing other than decreasing the velocity of the air as it enters the cylinder. In turn, this increases the time between spark and combustion making a slower burning, less powerful engine flowing no more air than it did before.

Through testing on our Superflow Flow Bench, we also discovered many different sizes and shapes would show no benefit in flow but would result in decreased velocity. As such, some ports may retain parts of their original casting, unmachined. This is not a mistake, as increasing the port size slightly larger to ensure all surfaces are machined proves less than ideal. CNC porting allows for precise profiling unachievable through hand porting and makes compensations necessary to account for core shift. The ultimate goal and end result was developing shape, volume and profile for each port that results in the highest flow yet the least decrease in velocity over stock.

APR’s Engineering Teams took development a step further though testing of 1mm oversized valves on both the intake and exhaust. Despite offering a significant improvement in airflow on the flow bench, there were no performance advantages from the engine. As mentioned earlier, the bottlenecks are located one at a time and between a ported head and oversized valve ported head, the restriction once again becomes the turbocharger system. The advantages of oversized ports are not realized until well over the 500 HP mark, which extends beyond other limitations in the system.

We recently had the pleasure of installing the first of many upgrades on this 2013 BMW F10 Twin Turbo M5.

This Product is Currently Available via our Online Web Store!

Every GruppeM carbon fiber air intake system is made by hand with light weight carbon fiber composites using the most advanced “wet” and “dry” carbon fiber manufacturing processes. Each system must exceed the requirements to sustain the extreme pressure induced by high performance engines.

Airflow velocity and temperature at the time of inhalation is critical to improved combustion. With the patented conical GruppeM filter shape, when air passes through the filter, it is compressed, and creates thrust similar to a jet engine, increasing the flow velocity. The limited space in the engine compartment is used as effectively as possible through extensive design. The shape of each GruppeM intake duct is designed to increase airflow velocity incrementally with the forced induction pressure.

Each GruppeM RAMair intake system has a serialized plate riveted to the surface of the intake duct to indicate the intake is a genuine GruppeM product, and exceeds the quality manufacturing and finished product standard set by GruppeM, and symbolizes the quality guarantee of every GruppeM product.

Even in 100% Stock trim from the Dealership the M5 is an exceptional vehicle. The additional of the //M Performance carbon fiber interior pieces really dressed this BMW up nicely!

The guys in the shop made quick work of getting the front end apart in order to complete the installation of the Gruppe M Carbon Fiber Fresh Air Inlets

We had no shortage of power on tap while the M5 was in the shop!

The Gruppe M Fresh Air Inlet

The Gruppe M quality was certainly on-point and up to our product standards to say the least.

One of our favorite pieces to this intake solution is the carbon / billet MAF sensor housings

In no time we were completely finished with the installation, and took a step back to admire the beauty.
